Over $82K to insure Santa’s sleigh? Experts weigh on St. Nick’s probable premium expense.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Most of us hit the road a bit more during the holiday season, but nobody puts more miles on their vehicle at this time of year than Santa Claus.

That thought led a team of insurance experts at Quartz, a car culture publication, to seek the answer to a hard-hitting holiday question: How much would it cost Santa to insure his sleigh?

As expected, that number won’t bring him any holiday cheer.

Those at Quartz took an in-depth look at Santa’s driver and vehicle profile to see which factors would raise or lower his premium, and published its findings.

They also spoke with insurance expert and owner of All About Insurance, “Saint” Nick Vitali, to find out how different factors would affect Santa’s rates.

Insurance premiums are based on how much risk a driver and their car present to the insurer, the investigators found. As a result, companies calculate prices based on a handful of individualized factors about the driver and their vehicle.

And they found that Santa’s sleigh would cost a whopping $82,550 to insure each year.

Though the Jolly Old Elf has a few things working in his favor, here’s a breakdown of why Santa’s sleigh would cost so much to insure:

Clean driving record

Santa has a clean driving record. Thanks to Rudolph lighting the way, Santa has never had an accident in his sleigh in more than 1,700 years of operating it. And there are currently no records of any speeding tickets or other moving violations, either, they found.

Safe community

Santa’s post office for the North Pole, located in Rovaniemi, Finland, is safe compared to many areas. Cost of living database Numbeo issues a crime index score and safety index score for cities around the world. Crime index scores below 20 are considered “very low,” while safer cities have higher overall safety index rankings. Rovaniemi is listed as having a crime index score of 18.5, making it one of the safest places on Earth.
