Police identify motorcycle rider, 33, who died in West Shore Expressway crash

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Police have identified the 33-year-old motorcycle rider who died after his vehicle collided with a pickup truck on the West Shore Expressway near in Rossville Saturday evening.

Michael Bugliaro of Whiting, New Jersey, was operating a 2009 Suzuki motorcycle when he suffered severe body trauma as a result of striking a pickup truck while traveling northbound on the West Shore Expressway around 5 p.m. on July 1, according to a spokesman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.

“He was attempting to travel in between the right and left lanes that were already occupied by vehicles,” said the spokesman. “Vehicles are riding, he’s going in the middle, trying to go between the cars.”

The crash occurred when Bugliaro was traveling northbound on the West Shore Expressway about a half mile away from the Arthur Kill Road and Huguenot Avenue exit, when he collided with a 2008 Dodge pickup truck that was attempting to switch from the right lane to the left lane, according to the preliminary investigation by police.

“As the truck was doing that [switching lanes] the motorcycle collided into his driver side door,” the spokesman said. “The motorcyclist lost control of his vehicle and ends up crashing into the roadway.”

Responding officers from the NYPD’s 123rd Precinct found Bugliaro lying in the roadway with body trauma at the scene. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene by EMS, police said.

The 52-year-old male driver of the Dodge remained on scene uninjured, according to the police spokesman.

There are no arrests; the investigation remains ongoing.
