Police shouldn’t race to crime scenes (letter to the editor)

In the last few months, several police auto chases, including racing to crimes in progress, has resulted in crashes, property damage and injury to police officers and the public.

Its just not worth the cost of a chase.

Its understandable that cops want to catch a fleeing felon or quickly get to a vital call for service, but often the cost exceeds the satisfaction of ending a car chase. Recklessly responding to calls for service helps no one.

NYC is a traffic nightmare. And cops are not professional race car drivers able to always jockey and avoid an accident.

NYC cops are the best and daily risk their lives for the public. We need them.

Police patrol supervisors should instill officers that if the public or they themselves are at serious risk of injury during a car chase, they should call it off.

Sooner or later the bad guy will get caught.

Its better to save a life than catch a criminal.

And it saves the city lawsuits and the costs of purchasing new police cars.
