Police: Staten Island teen, 19, dies after fiery crash on highway in Woodbridge

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A fiery crash on State Highway 440 in Woodbridge, N.J., claimed the life of a Staten Island teenager Monday afternoon.

Police identified Joey Lopez, 19, of Dongan Hills, as the teen who died after the vehicle he was driving struck a Freightliner truck in New Jersey on Highway 440, northbound, police said in a statement.

Officers responded on Monday at approximately 12:25 p.m. to a report of a crash on the highway in Woodbridge, according to a statement from the New Jersey State Police Public Information Unit.

According to officers, the vehicle Lopez was driving in entered the right shoulder and struck the rear of the 16-wheeler, causing both vehicles to catch fire.

“As a result of the crash, Lopez sustained fatal injuries and the driver of the Freightliner sustained minor injuries,” according to the police statement. “The crash remains under investigation.”
