Remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia to linger over New York

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As the remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia continued to deliver persistent rainfall to Staten Island Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service said precipitation is forecast to linger into Monday morning.

The Staten Island Advance/SILivecom weather station recorded 1.29 inches of rainfall since Saturday morning, and the National Weather Service’s New York office expected up to another 1.5 inches to accumulate between Sunday and Monday mornings.

There is a slight risk of flash flooding Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service, especially in vulnerable areas.

Before Ophelia dissipated from tropical storm-status, the system made landfall in North Carolina, bringing heavy rain and gusty wind across a wide swath of the East Coast. Forecasters said Ophelia nearly reached hurricane status, carrying maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

Areas as far north as New Jersey reported coastal flooding, and thousands in the Garden State remained without power Sunday, according to NJ.com, the Advance/SILive.com’s sister site.

Ophelia is forecast to continue to weaken as the storm’s center moves back out to sea.
