River of red wine floods small town in Portugal after two tanks burst in local distillery

While the East Coast contends with the effects of Hurricane Lee, a small town in Portugal is dealing with a unique, different disaster of its own: street flooding from 600,000 gallons of wine, according to Portugal News.

On Sept. 12, the outlet reported that two tanks of red wine burst at Levira Distillery, a winemaker in the town of Sรฃo Lourenรงo do Bairro, Portugal โ€” population 2,500 โ€” accidentally spilling enough wine to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The massive spill, which โ€œpainted the town red,โ€ rendered the streets unusable to the townโ€™s 2,500 residents. Local authorities immediately responded, diverting the wine, stopping it from reaching the nearby Certima River, according to Delish.

Volunteer firefighters successfully drained the liquid and transported it to a wastewater treatment plant.

No locals were injured in the vino accident, although people on social media regretted all the wasted wine, one saying it was โ€œgood wine down the drain.โ€ Another said, โ€œThat is amazing. I would love to see this in person. It looks like something out of a movie.โ€

Levira Distillery took to social media to publicly apologize for the incident. โ€œAlthough the incident did not cause any injuries, we want to express our sincere concern for the damage caused in general,โ€ the post reads. โ€œThe causes of the incident are being investigated by the competent authorities.

โ€œWe take full responsibility for the costs associated with damage cleanup and repair, with crews available to do it immediately. Weโ€™re committed to resolving this situation as soon as possible.โ€
