S.I. Half Marathon: More than 9,000 runners hit pavement ahead of next month’s NYC Marathon (photos)

More than 9,000 runs from around the globe hit the pavement Sunday for the sold-out Staten Island Half Marathon, the final race in the 2023 New York Road Runners’ Five Borough Series.

Many of the competitors use the Staten Island Half as a tuneup for the TCS New York City Marathon, which begins on Staten Island, on Nov. 5.

Brooklynite Ryan Cutter won the men’s division in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 7 seconds, while Alemtsehey Misganaw won the women’s crown in 1:18:06. The non-binary winner was Sofia Comacho Ferral (1:19:40).

Michael Cassidy, a former McKee/S.I Tech and University of Pennsylvania star, was the fastest Staten Islander, placing 16th in 1:12:29 out of 9,429 finishers.

In addition to Cassidy, hundreds of Staten Island runners were entered in the race but some of the notables were Tania Kinsella, the NYPD’s First Deputy Commissioner (and first woman of color in the position).

Kinsella competed Sunday with her new security detail, P.O. Tania Figueroa, and the Commanding Officer of the 123rd Precinct in Staten Island, Captain Glorisel Lee. The trio ran side by side for the duration of the Staten Island Half.

The three are in the midst of training for the NYC Marathon and will toe the line with approximately 70 NYPD Run Club members as well for the NYC Marathon.

“We are running our hometown race, the Staten Island Half,” said Kinsella, who has run several of the S.I. Half events.
