The Women’s Division of the South Shore Men’s Club stayed steady throughout and walked away with the victory in the Staten Island Women’s Golf Association’s annual Interclub Tournament last Sunday at South Shore Golf Course.
The event is considered the SIWGA’s premier tournament and is comprised of a 4-6 member teams representing seven Staten Island Women’s Golf Clubs and uses a Stableford scoring system, taking the total of the best 4 out of 6 individual points per hole.
The winning team, consisting of Louise Lawson, Brenda Meyers, Mary Gardner, Ellen Gribbin, Jane McCarthy and Patty Ruch, tallied 94 points. That despite a tough course that was rained upon leading up to the event which left high, wet rough and slow greens.
Gardner, the current Staten Island Women’s Amateur champ, scored the highest overall with 24 points, while Gribbin tallied 20 points with birdies on holes 6 and 18.
The Silver Lake Ladies Club was a close second with 90 points as Cathy Viverito was its key player with 23 points, which included birdies on holes 3 and 14. Jenn Albrizio added 20 points. Other team members were Eileen McKee, Kathy Devlin, Loretta Postiglione and Janis Grasso, who birdied hole No 3.
In third place was the defending champion Richmond County Country Club team with 85 points. Jill Buttermark, the current Classic winner, had 22 points with a birdie on hole No. 16, while Stacie MacCourtney scored 20 points. Carolyn Raia, Ann Marie Henderson, Maxine Spierer and Arlene Scollar rounded out the squad.
The Weekenders were fourth with 72 points. Debbie Rusolo and Paula Boulay both had birdies on the 10th holes. The other team members included Amy Powell, Laura Delin, Maria Caldarella and Joanne Gerenser.
In fifth place was the Silvettes with 71 points with Mayuko Perpetua scoring 22 points with a birdie on the fifth hole. Other team members were Nancy Lange, Ellen Wu, Joanne Baranello, Pat Hart and Bonnie Selletti.
