Minutes after Plaxico Burress caught the game-winning touchdown pass in Super Bowl XLII to help the Giants shock the unbeaten New England Patriots, he celebrated with his toddler son, Elijah, on the field as confetti flew and photographers captured an iconic moment.
And today, NFL fans who remember that can feel old: Elijah Burress, a wide receiver like his dad, will head to college in 2025, and on Saturday, he committed to Notre Dame with an announcement on Instagram.
Burress, a 6-foot-1 junior wide receiver at DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne, N.J., is another big name for Notre Dame, which is amassing one of the country’s top recruiting classes in 2025. Burress joins Ivan Taylor, a cornerback and son of Ike Taylor, who played with Plaxico Burress in the NFL.
This season, Elijah Burress — Burress, a three-star prospect and the No. 11 prospect in New Jersey — had 29 catches for 439 yards and five touchdowns to help lead the Spartans to the NJSIAA Non-Public B title game. His biggest game came against Bergen Catholic, when Burress had seven catches for 115 yards and a TD. He had three catches for 91 yards and two TDs against St. Peter’s Prep.
In an 11-year NFL career that included stints with the Steelers, Giants and Jets, Plaxico Burress caught 553 passes for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns. He missed the 2009 and 2010 seasons after accidentally shooting himself in a New York City nightclub and spending 20 months in prison on gun charges.
