STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The New York News Publishers Association has again recognized the outstanding contributions of the 2023 Staten Island Advance/SILive.com staff.
The latest recognition highlights the achievement of the Staten Island Advance/SiLive.com staff in securing the Distinguished Community Service Award for their collaborative effort on the “Pride and the Parade” series. Tracey Porpora, editor/news manager of the Public Interest & Advocacy Team, served as the lead editor for the impactful project.
In addition to editor Tracey Porpora, those who contributed to the coverage include: Lauren Lovallo, Kristin Dalton, Paul Liotta, Annalise Knudson, Eddie D’Anna, Steve White, Jan Somma-Hammel, Jason Paderon, Mark Stein, Tom Wrobleski, Pamela Silvestri, Dr. Gracelyn Santos, Erik Bascome, Kyle Lawson and the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com Opinion Team.
STATEN ISLAND’S ST. PATRICK’S PARADE
In early March of 2020, just before the pandemic shut down large gatherings, the staff was covering what they thought would be the story of the year – the controversy around the local St. Patrick’s Parade, an important annual tradition that is attended by thousands.
The parade committee had again denied the Staten Island LGBTQ+ Pride Center from marching under its own banner, and a few local elected officials had decided not to march in protest. The reigning Miss Staten Island then came out as bisexual and was barred from the event.
When the parade came back in 2022, the team was disappointed to see there was still a lack of change.
The day after the 2022 parade, the newsroom staff committed themselves to a year-long project to shine a spotlight on people and institutions that are continuing to allow this exclusion of fellow Staten Islanders from a community event – and to provide a bullhorn to those in the community who support inclusion, which the reporting has shown is the overwhelming majority of residents.
