Staten Island Advance/SILive recognized for ‘Staten Island 2100’ series

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The New York News Publishers Association recognized the outstanding contributions of the 2023 Staten Island Advance/SILive.com staff.

The latest recognition highlights the achievement of the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com staff in securing the Distinguished Multi-Media Presentation Award for their collaborative effort on the “Staten Island 2100: An Uncertain Future” series.

Those who contributed to the coverage included former Advance/SILive.com reporter Joseph Ostapiuk, managing producer of breaking news Eddie D’Anna, New York City Hall reporter Paul Liotta, and graphic designer and art director Sean McKeown-Young.

Understanding the significance of climate change, the most pressing global crisis today, becomes relevant to the average American when they recognize it can directly impact their local environment.

The staff undertook an ambitious project to make that connection for readers through both sophisticated reporting and relatable multimedia content that powerfully brings the reality of the climate crisis home on a local level.

“As a Designer and Art Director, I’ve spent my career trying to find new ways to better engage readers,” said designer Sean McKeown-Young, “I’m passionate, as we march further into an increasingly digital space, about innovation and discovering the growing array of tools that can help us relate these important stories to the public.’

“Staten Island 2100″ is a model that can be used for local climate reporting in other parts of the country. The series provides captivating animated graphics – presented in a video format – that show local streets, homes, playgrounds, and neighborhoods that could end up underwater if climate change continues unabated.

“When I was lucky enough to be included in the group working on Staten Island 2100, I jumped at the opportunity to push my skills”, McKeown-Young said.
