Staten Island faith leaders to be lauded at Universal Temple of the Arts JAZZ Festival 35

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Preparations for the Universal Temple of the Arts Staten Island JAZZ Festival 35 are underway, slated for Dec. 15 at the historic St. George Theatre. On hand will be WBGO’s On-Air radio personality and author Sheila E. Anderson, who will serve as the host of the festival.

The honorees for the event are individuals whose work and leadership have positively impacted the community, who have spiritually supported people, no matter their age or circumstances.

The honorees are: The Reverend Dr. Demetrius S. Carolina, Sr., Central Baptist Church; The Reverend Dr. Agnes M. McBeth, St. Phillips Baptist Church; Bishop Laverne Larkins-Owens, Mt. Sinai United Christian Church; The Reverend Dr. Alfred Correra of Brighton Heights Reformed Church, and Dr. Reverend Terry Troia, Project Hospitality.

“The faith leaders will take center stage to accept well-deserved accolades, along with proclamations and plaques presented to them by Universal Temple of the Arts, for bringing hope and joy to families of all faiths, diverse backgrounds, and cultures on Staten Island and beyond,” said Lorna Harris of UTA. “The accomplishments of each honoree foster strong public and private sector relationships, educate youth, address anti-violence initiatives, hunger, and homelessness.

“Each of these men and women of faith exemplify the mission of Universal Temple of the Arts, which is to quicken the creative spirit in the individual and community and foster brotherly love. The nonprofit Universal Temple of the Arts (UTA) was founded in 1967 by the late Sajda Musawwir Ladner, who believed that jazz is a spiritual power that brings energy and creativity to Staten Island audiences.”

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the St. George Theatre box office or Ticketmaster. All are welcome. Proceeds support FREE year-round arts and educational programs and the building fund to renovate the UTA Cultural Center headquarters. To learn more, visit: https://www.utasi.org/
