Daniel Joseph Rowan, a former Staten Island Advance second team All-Star for his excellence as a baseball player, died Aug. 22 following a short illness. The longtime Staten Islander played basketball for Sacred Heart School and baseball for Snug Harbor Little League and Staten Island Technical High School. Daniel had a great smile and enthusiastic demeanor, was kind, loyal and respectful. His compassionate nature was felt by all, from strangers to loved ones, reads his obituary.
John Henry Connell, a wonderful husband and father, of Maplewood, N.J., died Aug. 22, just before his 55th birthday. John was a โgenuine nice guy,โ says his obituary. The Staten Island native, who grew to 6โฒ9โณ, was a standout basketball player at Port Richmond High School. He worked at Prism Digital Communications and was a coach and amateur car mechanic, says his obituary.
Virginia Theresa Cowan, a beloved wife and grandmother who taught at Our Lady Queen of Peace School on Staten Island, died on Aug. 25, at her Grant City residence. She was 74. According to her obituary, Virginia spent her time traveling with friends and family, socializing with her neighbors over cups of tea, telling jokes and stories, and doing her most favorite activity, cherishing her two grandsons. Often found with either a book or a word search in hand, Virginia always enjoyed learning about new topics and expanding her knowledge.
Edward Joseph Checkett, husband, father, grandfather, friend, retired teacher died on Wednesday Aug. 23, at home, surrounded by his family. He began a 30-year teaching career with the NYC Board of Ed. He taught at William McKiney Junior High, High School of Telecommunications Arts & Technology, and Curtis High School. Upon retirement, Mr. Checkett taught sign language for 12 years at the Seton Foundation for Learning.
