Nancy Bell passed away at her home on Staten Island on Aug. 14, 2023. She was born Dec. 14, 1946 in SW Philly, PA, to the late Frank Lanzer Bell, Jr. and Jane Loretta Kehl. Virginia Theresa Cowan, daughter of the late Dominick and Anna Tortorella, passed away on Aug. 25, peacefully at home in Grant City, Staten Island surrounded by family at the age of 74. Virginia graduated Suma Cum Laude from SUNY New Paltz before receiving her Masters degree from Rutgers University.Virginia taught elementary school at Incarnation School in Manhattan and Our Lady Queen of Peace in Staten Island. Virginia established The Parish Parenting Center at St. Charles Church, the Mothers and Babies Circle, the Rainbow Program for all Godโ€™s Children and facilitated training sessions for the programโ€™s future personnel. YESTERDAYS OBITUARIES

Daniel Joseph Rowan, a former Staten Island Advance second team All-Star for his excellence as a baseball player, died Aug. 22 following a short illness. The longtime Staten Islander played basketball for Sacred Heart School and baseball for Snug Harbor Little League and Staten Island Technical High School. Daniel had a great smile and enthusiastic demeanor, was kind, loyal and respectful. His compassionate nature was felt by all, from strangers to loved ones, reads his obituary.

Edward Joseph Checkett, husband, father, grandfather, friend, retired teacher died on Wednesday Aug. 23, at home, surrounded by his family. He began a 30-year teaching career with the NYC Board of Ed. He taught at William McKiney Junior High, High School of Telecommunications Arts & Technology, and Curtis High School.
