Staten Island scam victim details $50k shakedown: Report

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An 86-year-old Staten Islander scammed out of $50,000 in cash said he was duped by a pair of men who claimed his son was in trouble after a crash, the victim told NBC New York.

The man said he first received a call on Aug. 15 from an individual claiming to be his son.

“‘Dad,’ he says, ‘I’ve been in a bad accident. I broke my nose’ and he’s got this nasal sound,” said the victim. “When that call comes in, I’m half-groggy. I’m tired.”

Then, a second person claiming to be his son’s attorney said cash is needed to keep his son out of jail. Not long after, the scammers came to the man’s home to collect money.

“They got me good,” said the victim. A second meeting the next day got him for even more money. “All together, I lost $50,000 in cash.”

His son, meanwhile, was never arrested. He walked through the front door not long after the second meeting.

“It was a perfect storm,” the man told News 4. “The only reason I’m speaking out is because I want these guys to get caught.”
