STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Dr. Joshua D. Segal has been named chairman of the Dental Medicine Department at Staten Island University hospital (SIUH), a position held by Dr. Donald Ratcliffe for more than 17 years.
Ratcliffe will be transitioning from his position to focus on his passion — patient care — on a per diem basis with the hospital.
Hospital leadership praised both Ratcliffe and Segal.
“Dr. Ratcliffe has made lasting impacts in SIUH’s dental services and residency programs, training over 475 residents during his tenure,” said Dr. Brahim Ardolic, SIUH’s executive director. “We are fortunate that Dr. Ratcliffe will continue to care for patients at the hospital in his new role.”
“Our dental practice has expanded into a major teaching program, as our experts provide world-class dental care for eligible patients while training the dental professionals of tomorrow,’’ said Ardolic adding that Segal is expected to continue building on this strong foundation.
Prior to joining SIUH, Segal was program director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center of Northwell Health. He also holds the position of assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell and is the assistant investigator at the Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.
Segal earned his doctor of dental surgery (DDS) and medical degree from Stony Brook University. He went on to complete his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In 2022, he completed a master’s degree in health professions education (MSEd) at Hofstra University.
Segal is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He is an ABOMS board examiner.
