STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A Staten Island woman who worked as a teacher in Brooklyn was arrested after locking a 3-year-old inside a closet at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy in Windsor Terrace, prosecutors allege.
Alexis Breeden, 30, of Castleton Corners, was arraigned Feb. 28 in Brooklyn Criminal Court on charges of endangering the welfare of a child and unlawful imprisonment.
The judge granted her supervised release.
Breeden locked a 3-year-old boy in a cardboard box inside of a utility closet at the school, according to a complaint filed by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.
On Feb. 2, at 8 a.m., the school nurse witnessed Breeden holding the handle of the closet door shut as the boy cried inside, according to the complaint.
The nurse then immediately directed Breeden to release the boy from the locked closet, the complaint says.
The New York Post reported, in the weeks leading up to the incident, Breeden would threaten her K-3 students with a Grinch mask that was kept in the classroom closet, according to parents.
Breeden would allegedly tell the children, “The Grinch is in there,” a parent told the Post.
The Dongan Avenue resident was fired after the alleged incident.
According to court records, Breeden pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against her.
An attorney for the defendant did not respond to a request to comment by the time of publication.
