STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Upgrades are coming to Staten Island’s two branches of the YMCA, thanks to more than $1 million in government funding.
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn) announced Monday that $1 million in federal grant money had been awarded to the Y’s two Island locations, on Broadway in Sunnyside and on Richmond Avenue in Eltingville, for new pool dehumidification systems and HVAC upgrades.
“This organization is so important, because they serve young children all the way to our our elderly — it gives them many things to do to keep themselves mentally and physically active and healthy, and I’m really happy to have helped earmark this money,” Malliotakis said. “We’re happy to support Staten Islanders on the South Shore and the North Shore, and we appreciate the work that the YMCA does. It is a very important facility and resource for so many, and I hope that many people in our community will benefit and find enjoyment as a result of this grant.”
In late September, Assemblyman Charles Fall (D-North Shore/Brooklyn/Manhattan) also announced a $350,000 state investment at the Broadway YMCA branch for upgrades to the location’s pool.
Fall said that investment would help the YMCA location provide better humidity control in its pool area to provide a more comfortable environment for visitors, preserve the building’s infrastructure, and promote a healthier aquatic experience.
“Every dollar invested in community spaces like the YMCA translates to improved health, wellbeing, and communal connection,” Fall said. “This isn’t just about technology or infrastructure; it’s about fostering an environment where families can thrive, seniors can engage safely, and our youth can build lifelong health habits in comfort and security.”
