Staten Islander spreads kindness to the nurses at SIUH in memory of her beloved sister

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Dorothy Anderson was a dedicated nurse and the most compassionate person her sister ever knew.

That’s why the younger sister delivered an anonymous donation of lovingly assembled holiday treats to the nurses of Staten Island University (SIUH), Prince’s Bay, on Tuesday. She did it in memory of Anderson, whom she lost four years ago to breast cancer.

A variety of candies were wrapped in festive gift bags, and included a poem listing the reasons for each choice. “LIFESAVER: To remind you of the many times you’ve been one,’’ one line read, while “PEPPERMINT PATTY: To remind you to keep cool,’’ read another. And “100 GRAND: Because you don’t get paid enough,’’ was just one more.

The treats were spread out among every nursing unit in the hospital, a spokesperson said.

December is particularly tough for the Eltingville teacher’s aide. It was the month in which Anderson was born, said the sister, who asked to remain anonymous to keep the focus on Anderson.

Known as ‘Dotty’’ to family and friends, Anderson died in May 2019 and would have been 72 on Dec. 15.

For the past four years, Anderson’s sister has wrapped up enticing holiday sweets and delivered them to nurses — the most deserving people she said she knows. They’re people who do a demanding job she said she could never do.

“They must have been born with something special,’’ said Anderson’s sister. “They’re angels on Earth. It doesn’t matter the color of your skin, who you are, they just care for you — unconditionally.”
