Staten Island’s Seamen’s Society will honor generous supporters

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A non-profit organization that has offered hope to Staten Island children and families in need for 177 years will host its annual Hope Gala on Friday, Nov. 17, from 7 p.m. to midnight at LiGreci’s Staaten, West Brighton.

Seamen’s Society for Children and Families will present the Safe Harbor Award to Doreen Cugno and Luanne Sorrentino, community champions and co-founders of the historic St. George Theatre, and Northfield Bank, which has been serving Staten Island since 1887.

Theresa Beard, a dedicated foster parent for Seamen’s, will receive the Joan Arnold Award.

The Hope Gala honorees have supported the organization with their generosity and compassion.

Cugno and Sorrentino have collected toys and provided theatrical experiences for Seamen’s Society children and families. Northfield Bank has been a steady advocate for Seamen’sprograms, including the annual Family Fun Walk in Clove Lakes Park. Beard, who lives in St. George, has been a foster parent for more than 30 years while also adopting 15 of her foster children.

“Each honoree serves as a beacon of hope and has contributed to our mission of strengthening the children and families entrusted to our care,” said David W. Gaskin, president and CEO

“Hope is the lifeblood of Seamen’s Society – a force that drives our mission to transform lives and nurture our community,” Gaskin continued. “It’s the hope of reuniting families, educating young minds, rebuilding strength within families, and supporting domestic violence survivors on their path to healing.”

“Ultimately, it’s the hope that one day, our services won’t be needed,” the CEO added.
