STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Looking west along Richmond Terrace, at Park Avenue in Port Richmond, this view shows some buildings still standing from the 1920s. A few of the old buildings have been renovated to house new businesses. The double-decker porched building, which was the site of the St. James Hotel, built in 1795, and the diner on the corner, are gone.
Richmond Terrace is shown between Richmond Avenue and Park Avenue in Port Richmond. There is a barricade in the center of the street with two signs attached: “STRAIGHT AHEAD / FOR / BAYONNE / FERRY” and “CONSTRUCTION / DETOUR.” Businesses visible include the Richmond Clipper diner, Schiff’s Furniture, and Sam’s Taxi. It is dated c1950-1955. (From the Historic Richmond Town Collection)

This corner was a busy section for commerce, due to the ferry to Bayonne, New Jersey, just a block away. Ferries between what is now Port Richmond and Bayonne, formerly known as Bergen’s Point, started running in the early 18th century, when Jacob Corson established service across the Kill van Kull. It ended its run in December 1961, according to Bayonne Metro.
