The Gym Bag: Pete Rossomando picks up 1st win at Lamar; Buckets for Babies hoops tourney and St. Andrew 5K Steeplechase news

Football lifer Pete Rossomando picked up his initial win as Lamar University’s head coach last Saturday, a 38-0 non-conference thumping of Lincoln (California).

Rossomando, a Port Richmond High School and Boston University product, watched his Beaumont, Texas, school, a FCS member which plays in the Southland Conference, start the season with three straight losses.

It was the Cardinals’ first shutout since 2014.

“Obviously, it’s great to win,” said Rossomando, 51, who had successful head coaching stints at New Haven and Central Connecticut State. “I told the team inside it’s hard to beat anybody. If they are getting off the bus, it’s a hard game to win … so we did a good job.”

Rossomando said the win is validation of what he and his staff are trying to accomplish in Texas.

“Sometimes it’s hard to get up and go to work when you are 0-3, but our guys haven’t batted an eye,” said Rossomando, who was 2-2 as interim head coach at Charlotte in 2022. “They trusted the process and finally got a win and hopefully it continues to move us forward.”

Rossomando spent two seasons serving as offensive line coach at Rutgers (2019) and Vanderbilt (2020). During his tenure at CCSU, he led the program to its first NCAA FCS playoff appearance in program history by posting an 8-4 overall, including a first-place, 6-0 mark in the Northeast Conference. As a result, he was named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award.

Rossomando’s Cardinals begin their conference slate Saturday on the road vs. Houston Christian of Texas. Lamar hasn’t had a winning season since 2018.
