STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island District Attorney Michael E. McMahon was officially sworn in for his third term as Staten Island’s highest ranking law enforcement official on Tuesday after running for re-election unopposed this past November.
McMahon was sworn in by his wife, Supreme Court Justice Judith N. McMahon, in his office, surrounded by Chief Assistant District Attorney Tim Koller and the rest of his staff.
“It is the honor of my lifetime to work for the people of Staten Island as their district attorney, and I am immensely grateful that our neighbors have entrusted me to serve another term,” McMahon said in a statement.
“As we enter 2024, I want to reaffirm to every Staten Islander that the safety of all our neighborhoods, all our businesses, all our homes and all our residents remains my foremost priority,’’ he said. “Yet, our pursuit of these goals is harder than ever. The men and women of my office face immense challenges daily, from Albany’s failed criminal justice reforms, historic lows in NYPD personnel, the proliferation of highly sophisticated scams, the omnipresence of fentanyl in nearly all illegal drugs, the explosion of illegal cannabis sales in our convenience stores and more.”
McMahon went on to say that while it is easy to become discouraged, he and his team plan to remain steadfast in prosecuting those who break the law, without losing sight of the fact that “there must be consequences for illegal behavior,’’ and that from litter and graffiti to the most serious, violent crimes, criminal behavior will never be acceptable.
“In my next term, we will continue working on parallel tracks: Forcefully advocating for desperately needed changes to our laws to make it possible for us to hold lawbreakers more seriously accountable, while simultaneously doing everything we can within the constraints imposed on us by City Hall and Albany to keep you safe, McMahon said.
