STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A whole lot of guac comes from 1210 Forest Ave., now home to the second Sofia’s Guac Bar. The tiny digs at the corner of Llewellyn Place opened after two months of renovations.
Peter Botros co-owns the spot, formerly home to the North Shore location of Dolce Fantasia (the latter now serving at the South Shore Commons and Asbury Park.)
Botros’ newest restaurant presents six styles of guacamole with freshly fried chips made from yellow corn, wheat flour and/or a blend of the two grains. Guac flavors include Five Alarm, Sofia’s Secret, Strawberry-Cucumber, Fire-Roasted Corn, Mango-Habanero and Pineapple. The bar presents over 40 brands of tequila for pairing with a modest entree lineup — tacos and burritos.
Sofia’s of Westerleigh seats 18 guests at tables and an intimate bar with six stools. Outdoor dining for 30 patrons offers access to a walkup Margarita window.
“It’s designed for a little bit more casual, definitely more fast service than we have at Sofia’s Taqueria in Rosebank and Eltingville. It’s similar to the setup at the Staten Island Mall. It’s a very quaint place,” explained Botros.
This makes Number Four in the Sofia’s branding. Botros anticipates a busy location and loves the neighborhood.
He added, “It’s ideal for people in this neighborhood, for the great hard-working people in the area, very similar to the clientele we serve at Sally’s. It’s a tight-knit community with generations of family in the neighborhood.”
Partners in the project include the namesake’s father, and Botros’ long-time friend Ignacio Garcia. His daughter’s lively, friendly demeanor served as inspiration for the brand and its colorful theme. Philip Farinacci also is a principal. Between Farinacci and Botros, 12 restaurants exist on Staten Island and in the Catskills. Other venues include Violette’s and Rustic Pizza in Grant City, Sally’s Southern, The Stone House at Clove Lakes, plus Tito Banditos and Binikill Tavern…
