This Jets weapon might not be under-the-radar for much longer

In the eyes of most, he was simply an afterthought — a late addition to the Jets roster, who would help his new teammates learn the ropes of playing with Aaron Rodgers without having very much left to give himself.

When Randall Cobb signed with the Jets back in May, some Jets fans were even worried he would take reps away from the young developing receivers who needed it. And it’s understandable because the now-33-year-old Cobb hasn’t had more than 38 catches or 450 yards in each of his last three seasons.

He even acknowledged this week that he was considering retiring before finally deciding to join Rodgers in New Jersey. But as he stood in the locker room, Cobb was clearly feeling at home in his new home.

“Watching ‘Hard Knocks’ definitely would’ve made me wish that I was still playing,” Cobb said. “I’m glad I made the decision to come back. When you love the game the way I do … it’s hard to go into that next phase of life. I know at some point that time will come, but luckily it’s not right now.”

No, it isn’t time for Cobb to hang it up just yet. In fact, from what we’ve seen during training camp and the preseason, Cobb has a very good chance to be a hugely important weapon on the offense this year — in part, funny enough, because of the unexpected retirement of 28-year-old Corey Davis.

Cobb is now by far the most experienced receiver in the Jets’ room. He’s helped his younger teammates learn what’s expected of them from Rodgers, and translate the terminology of the new offense. On “Hard Knocks” this week, we saw him take undrafted rookie Xavier Gipson under his wing.

“Everything that we’ve heard about him from a leadership standpoint is priceless,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “You can’t put a price tag on that, but he’s been awesome.”
