STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The city Sanitation Department (DSNY) performed another trash miracle when a bag of jewelry lost in the Brooklyn trash was recovered before it made it to the department’s facility.
“These residents accidentally lost a bag of jewelry in their trash in Brooklyn,” the DSNY wrote on Twitter. “They got in touch with us to let us know, and we held the truck that made the pickup so it could be searched. After a little looking…success!”
A photo posted on social media shows the small bag with precious gold pieces in the latest of the agency’s lost-and-found success.
An Eltingville resident last year reached out to the agency after she lost a ring that was accidentally tossed in the garbage.
“I recognize the massive amount of facilitation that took place, and the chaos I caused,” said Jackie Cacace after the search. “I am simply impressed, humbled and overwhelmed with joy. This was a simple act of kindness where all these men went above and beyond my expectations.”
The DSNY found an engagement ring and earrings in 2017 that was buried within tons of trash on Staten Island.
“Talk about looking for a needle in a haystack,” said Vito Turso, a spokesman for Sanitation.
The engagement ring and earrings in that search were located at about 5:35 p.m., less than 10 hours after the items were reported missing.
