STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A Staten Island man accused of fatally stabbing his 81-year-old neighbor and wounding two others works in the pizza business on Staten Island, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation.
Ramazan Ramusevic, 57, was arraigned during a virtual meeting from his hospital bed Wednesday in state Supreme Court, St. George, on charges that include second-degree murder, first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
He stands accused in the Sept. 22 murder of Francesco (Frank) Pompilii inside a home on Sunnyside Terrace in Sunnyside.
Assistant District Attorney Jason Cohen said Wednesday that prosecutors are in the process of reviewing a “voluminous” amount of evidence recovered at the scene.
The two other men found stabbed by emergency responders were Pompilii’s friend, Redzep Cobaj, 78, and Cobaj’s son, Skender Cobaj, 51, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation. The men all knew each other, sources said.
Ramusevic, who was handcuffed to a hospital bed during the virtual appearance Wednesday, is undergoing examination for mental health issues, a source noted this week.
“His face was like a madman,” neighbor Kelly Doyle said of the suspect when police took him into custody, according to the New York Post. “He looked deranged when he came out.”
At his arraignment this week, the defendant — wiry in stature with a messy, gray head of hair and facial stubble — listened intently to Justice Lisa Grey, who oversaw the hearing. He frequently rubbed his face and at one point shook his head from side to side as if in disbelief.
His attorney, Craig Newman, told the court that he was awaiting discovery from prosecutors before arguing for bail. He declined to comment following the hearing.
Grey ordered the defendant be remanded at the behest of prosecutors, before adjourning the case to Nov. 2.
