Hundreds of Jets fans were angrily ‚and understandably, leaving MetLife Stadium with about two minutes left in Sunday afternoon’s game against the Giants.
They ended up missing a hell of a finish. Although, things changed so quickly that some of them might have had time to make it back to their seats before it was over.
In a season full of weird and unlikely events for the Jets, this might be the ultimate “are you kidding me” moment: The Jets were outclassed and banged up. And for much of the day, they were out-coached. And somehow they found a way to beat the Giants, 13-10 in overtime.
With 28 seconds left in regulation, the Jets seemed doomed to a miserable loss to the Giants, who had -8 net passing yards as they lined up for a field goal that seemed certain to seal the game after the Giants ran down the clock and forced the Jets to use all their timeouts. But Graham Gano missed a 35-yard field goal to give the Jets life.
It was the faintest of heartbeats because the Jets’ offense had been embarrassingly awful up to that point. They were 1-for-14 on third down for the game and hadn’t scored since a long first-quarter touchdown catch by Breece Hall (funny enough, it was their first touchdown in the first quarter this season). And they had 25 seconds to go at least 40 yards to get themselves into field goal range.
And yet, like two lightning bolts from the dark sky above MetLife, the Jets did the unthinkable: Zach Wilson found Garrett Wilson for a 29-yard gain. And then he found Allen Lazard for a 29-yard gain over the middle.
It looked like the game might end right there. They had no timeouts and no way to stop the clock unless they could spike it in time. And with one second left, they did. A moment later, Zuerlein nailed a 35-yard field goal to tie the game.
He did the same in overtime, after the Jets’ defense forced a quick three-and-out, nailing it from 33 yards to set off a subdued celebration on the field at MetLife. Even the Jets couldn’t…
