Washington unfazed by Michigan sign-stealing saga

HOUSTON – Washington’s football team appears determined to quash any storylines about sign-stealing heading into Monday’s national championship against Michigan.

The sign-stealing drama that has engulfed Michigan’s football program since October resurfaced ahead of last week’s Rose Bowl semifinal between the Wolverines and Alabama.

Crimson Tide players said they had ditched their tablets to watch individual film and began watching in groups. The same adjustment was made by Michigan in November as a precaution to potential safety concerns over the software that powers tablets used by college football programs to watch film.

The Huskies seemed unfazed by the sign-stealing narrative at Saturday’s national championship media day.

“We haven’t really paid too much attention to it,” said Washington’s Rome Odunze, who ranks second nationally with 1,553 receiving yards. “It’s something that we aren’t really concerned with. At the end of the day, we feel like we will be able to go out there and compete regardless. We haven’t really paid too much attention to the sign-stealing. That’s their story. We just want to keep it about us.”

Catapult Sports — the performance analytics company behind the software — acknowledged last week an ongoing NCAA investigation into “the alleged unauthorized access to NCAA football video footage.”

Washington players said their game week preparation hasn’t changed from Week 1 until now despite the latest revelations.

“We’ve heard of it but we weren’t really focused on it,” Washington defensive lineman Jacob Bandes said. “We have a lot of… we’re secure, we’re safe so we make sure our signs aren’t stolen.”
