STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — High winds, heavy rain and flooding are blasting Staten Island and all of New York City on Monday morning a week before Christmas.
Showers and downpours are forecast to pummel Staten Island into the early afternoon and fierce winds are expected to continue to blow until at least noon on Monday, according to AccuWeather.com.
Throughout the region, southeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts 45 to 55 mph are likely, according to the National Weather Service.
Peak winds are expected to blow between now and 9 a.m. with gusts that could exceed 60 mph along the coast, according to the National Weather Service New York.
“Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects,” according to the National Weather Service. “Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.”
Rainfall could total 2 to 4 inches or more for the region through the afternoon. The heaviest precipitation is expected to fall through the middle of this morning.
Rain is forecast to last until at least 1 p.m. on Staten Island, according to AccuWeather.com.
Flooding could continue to be a threat into the late afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
“The combination of heavy rainfall and the already saturated grounds will likely result in streams across the area experiencing rapid rises, resulting in flooding along low-lying and flood-prone locations,” according to the National Weather Service.
An area flood advisory has been in effect since 2:45 a.m. at will continue until at least 7:15 a.m. A coastal flood warning is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and an area flood watch continues until 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
The mercury is expected to peak at about 60 degrees, according to AccuWeather.com.
