STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Fatal car accidents are increasing across the country, with the number of deadly crashes climbing by nearly 10% from 2020 to 2022, studies have shown.
But in some cities, dangerous driving habits tends to be less common, putting drivers at lower risk when they get behind the wheel.
So, which cities have the best and worst drivers?
Forbes Advisor recently compared the 50 most populated cities across five key metrics to find out. For all metrics, researchers took a five-year average, using National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and U.S. Census data from 2017 through 2021.
They found that New York City, despite its reputation for impatient, vocal and aggressive drivers, ranked third among the cities with the best drivers.
The study also found that three of the top 15 cities with the worst drivers are all located in Texas: Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio.
Albuquerque, New Mexico, topped the list of cities with the worst drivers, followed by: Memphis, Tennessee; Detroit, Michigan; Tucson, Arizona, and Kansas City, Missouri.
And Memphis had the highest number of fatal car accidents involving a drunk driver (7.5 per 100,000 residents), while New Mexico had the highest number of fatal accidents involving a distracted driver (5.42 per 100,000 city residents).
On the bright side, here’s a look at the top five cities with the best drivers, according to the Forbes Advisor study:
- Boston, Massachusetts: The study found that Boston boasts the second-lowest total number of fatal car accidents (3.26 per 100,000 city residents) and the second-lowest number of fatal car accidents involving speeding (0.77 per 100,000 city residents). The city also reports the third lowest number of fatal car accidents involving a drunk driver (0.95 per 100,000 city residents).
