Women’s golf: Jill Buttermark claims Classic Tournament crown

Jill Buttermark carded a 78 gross to claim the overall crown in the Staten Island Women’s Golf Association’s Classic Tournament held Sunday at LaTourette Golf Course.

The event had been postponed due to inclement weather in July, but Mother Nature was not an issue Sunday for the 36 women, who competed in three divisions in both the Gross and Net categories on admirable course conditions.

Buttermark, a multi club-champion winner at her Richmond County Country Club home course, started the day off with a birdie on the first hole and played a solid round with an impressive 11 pars. With long, straight drives, precision chips and steady putts, she seemed very relaxed and was in her stride throughout the round.

Mayuko Perpetua finished second with an 87, while Mary Gardner, the current Women’s Amateur Champion, was third with an 88 in a match of cards over Women’s Amateur competitor Ellen Gribbin.

In the Women’s Net Division, it was Amy Powell with a 71, followed by Debbie Rusolo 73 and Laura Delin for third in a match of cards over Ellen Gribbin with 74.

In the Senior Division, Gross winners were Connie Burns with an 89 and Cathy Bocchicchio with a 99 in a match of cards over Patti Caffrey, who recorded two birdies on holes No. 2 and No. 3. In the Senior Net Division, Paulette Gabel was first with a 76, Lynda Preziosa (77) second and Joanne Gerenser (79) third.

In the Super Senior Division, the Gross winner was Elissa Barry with an 89. Net winners were Pier Fetz with a 69 followed by Louise Lawson with a 77 in a match of cards over Jeannette Gullo.

In the skills completion for longest drive on No. 10 were Patty Ruch (W), Lottie O’Hara (S) and Elissa Barry (SS). Closest to the pin honors on No. 12 went to Perpetua (W), Judy Retensky (S) and Louise Lawson (SS).

The next event will be the Solheim Cup on Saturday, Sept. 23 at Silver Lake Golf Course. Applications are available on the SIWGA website (https://siwga.org/).
