Yankees castoff leans on old organization for inspiration now

Aaron Hicks was there when the Yankees trailed 0-2 in the best-of-five ALDS series against Cleveland in 2017. That team came back, eliminating Cleveland in five games, earning its first trip to the ALCS since 2012.

Now, the Yankees castoff finds himself in a similar situation with the Baltimore Orioles, who trail the Texas Rangers 0-2 in the ALDS.

On Tuesday, Hicks recalled what it took for New York to overcome their deficit in 2017.

โ€œWe understood what kind of team we are,โ€ Hicks said, via Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner. โ€œWe understood we were a dangerous team that can score in many ways, and we believed in each other, and thatโ€™s what you have to do.โ€

In 20 plate appearances that series, Hicks posted six hits, one home run and four RBI, helping the Yankees to become only the 10th team to come back from 0-2 in the ALDS. No team has done it since.

What do the Orioles need to do to join the list?

โ€œWe understand that we canโ€™t lose anymore,โ€ Hicks said. โ€œWe just gotta take it game by game, doing everything possible to win each game. Understanding that little things win ballgames, and you have to do your best to get the job done. If thereโ€™s a man on second and no outs, you have to find a way to get him to third and from third, in. Being able to understand the game and know how to score runs is what this team is able to do.โ€

Hicks missed a hit-and-run signal in the ninth inning of Game 1, which the Orioles lost 3-2. Baltimoreโ€™s Gunnar Henderson was caught stealing second base as a result, and then Hicks struck out.

In Game 2, with the Orioles down 11-5 in the ninth inning, Hicks, who already had a two-run single earlier in the game, hit a three-run home run to cut the Rangers lead to 11-8. Unfortunately, the game ended after the next two batters, Ryan Oโ€™Hearn and Cedric Mullins, recorded outs.

Game 3 is set for Tuesday at 8:03 EST.
