Yankees, Luis Severino blown to smithereens by Orioles in 14-1 rout

NEW YORK – Just how bad was it? The Stadium crowd was derisively cheering every time the Orioles didn’t score a run. The murmuring from the stands was restless, impatient, fed up. On YES, announcers Michael Kay and Paul O’Neill were so bored they joked about trading places behind the mic.

Yep, that bad.

To say the Yankees were destroyed by the Orioles on Thursday is merely the G-rated version of what actually happened. The 14-1 wipeout featured back-to-back stinkers by Luis Severino and reliever Albert Abreu, both of whom looked over-matched, assuming they weren’t injured.

Otherwise the Yankees’ hierarchy will have to take a hard look at the starting rotation as the season’s mid-point approaches. Severino, in particular, is in crisis. His trend line could eclipse the much-anticipated return of Carlos Rodon on Friday against the Cubs.

In his last two starts, both awful, Severino has allowed 14 earned runs in 6.2 innings. As he walked off the mound in the third inning, the right-hander’s ERA had ballooned to 7.38.

The Orioles’ 20-hit attack started slowly, as they only scored one run in the first two innings. But then came a devastating ambush in the third: the O’s sent 12 men to the plate in a seven-run, eight-hit outburst.

Gunnar Henderson, who led off the game with a HR to left, had three hits and three RBIs off Severino by the third inning. The destruction was paved by a relentless stretch during which five of the first six hitters Severino faced reached base.

Still, the Yankees were only trailing by five runs – only! – when Severino was finally sent to the showers. Unfortunately Abreu was no better, acting as an accelrent to Baltimore’s raging fire.

The reliever was charged with six runs in just two-thirds of an inning, raising his ERA from 3.11 to 4.46. Abreu allowed eight of the 10 batters he faced to reach base.
