Yankees not sure if Gerrit Cole is out of woods for Tommy John surgery

TAMPA, Fla. — Aaron Boone headed from the Yankees dugout to his manager’s office after Wednesday’s spring training game at Steinbrenner Field, a 9-4 loss to the Red Sox.

Seeing beat writers waiting in a hallway, Boone said, “Come on in guys.”

“No, not yet,’ PR man Jason Zillo told Boone before huddling with the manager for a few minutes to fill him in on the New York Post’s in-game post that staff ace Gerrit Cole will be sidelined one-to-two months minimum with a right elbow injury.

Boone verified the Post reporting that Cole was headed to Los Angeles to meet with famed baseball surgeon Neal ElAttrache for a second opinion on his elbow, but continuously stated the Yankees still aren’t completely sure what they’re dealing with.

Cole had an MRI on Monday, then a CT scan and X-rays on Tuesday. More tests are scheduled for Thursday.

That’s why you do a lot of different tests to try and get the best possible diagnosis you have.”

Because the testing is ongoing, Tommy John surgery can’t be ruled out.

“I have no idea,” Boone said. “We’re not withholding anything. If we had information — ‘OK, here’s the diagnosis, here’s the course of action’ — We’ll give that to you. We don’t have that yet.”
