Yankees romp over Orioles ignited by Gleyber Torres, Mr. Hustle on Fourth of July

NEW YORK — Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres has been known to dog it at times. He’ll sometimes not run hard to first base on groundballs. He’ll do things in the field from time to time that make you shake your head.

On Fourth of July at Yankee Stadium, Torres gets an A+ for baseball IQ and hustle.

With the game tied in the fifth inning Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, Torres scored from first base on a ground single to center by Giancarlo Stanton. The Yankees had the lead back and went on to beat the Orioles 8-4.

Torres started a two-out rally in the sixth by working a walk facing Orioles starter Kyle Gibson.

Stanton followed with a hard grounder that just got past Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson for a hit. Running at contact with two down, Torres took a chance while correctly thinking center fielder Cedric Mullins would field the ball and lollygag a throw to second.

Never slowing down, Torres ran through a stop sign put up by third-base coach Luis Rojas, who pointed to the bag, and scored without a throw to make it 4-3 Yankees.

“I saw (Torres) at shortstop and said, ‘He’s going,’” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Sometimes that invisibility pays off. He is very instinctive and that was a very instinctive play. It gets him in trouble sometimes. Had they thrown him out of the plate, you guys would probably be asking me about it. Instead, the crowd goes wild.

“It’s that fine line. You try and educate and talk through situations and learn from experiences all the time. Gleyber does have a knack for doing those kinds of things because he’s kind of fearless.

“Again, sometimes he gets in trouble, so you want to reign it in a little bit. But it’s actually a really heads-up play knowing that ball is going to come in to second (base. So everything’s got to line up perfectly … catch, turn, the second baseman even knowing you’re going. It turns into a really good play.”
