When is status quo a good thing?
When you’re talking about the Richard Willis Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, that’s when!
The long-time youth basketball tourney has experienced little change through the years and when the 27th annual event takes place between Aug. 12 and 13, six different divisions for both boys and girls will once again take centerstage at the College of Staten Island’s Sports and Recreational Center in Willowbrook (2800 Victory Blvd.).
It’s not too late to sign up, either. The Aug. 6 deadline for registration is a little less than two weeks away.
“We’re obviously looking forward to having another great year with the tournament,’’ said Richard Willis Memorial Foundation chairman Sly Willis. “We always appreciate the turn out we get each year, not to mention the support we receive from so many people.’’
Richard Willis, of course, was a former insurance claims manager who was active in Midland Beach, Grant City and the sporting community on Staten Island until his passing in 1993.
The tournament has hosted as many as 119 teams in the past and routinely has as many as 70 volunteers for the two-day event.
The tourney is for children between 8-18-years-old. The 10-U (8:45 a.m. start) and 14-U (11:30 a.m. start) age brackets will play on Aug. 12.
The 12-U (8:45 a.m. start), 16-U (11:30 a.m.) and 18-U (12:30 p.m.) age brackets, as well as the 18-over (1:30 p.m.) bracket, will play on Aug. 13.
The registration fee is $90 per team and includes two guaranteed games, a T-shirt and souvenirs to all participants. The runner-up and championship teams for each division will receive trophies. Teams may consist of three or four players (one substitute).
Those interested in registering may do so online by visiting www.rwillis3on3.org and filling out the form there or printing the form from the same website and mailing it with a check payable to the Richard Willis Memorial Fund to 54 Fremont Ave., S.I., N.Y., 10306. You may also call 917-692-8570.
