Police in the Bronx have identified three suspects whom, they say, are responsible for Friday’s deadly shooting on the D train.
According to authorities, investigators believe that 24-year-old Justin Herde, 38-year-old Betty Cotto, and 42-year-old Alfredo Trinidad are allegedly connected to the killing of 45-year-old William Alvarez as the train rattled into the East 182 Street and Grand Concourse station at around 5:02 a.m. on Feb. 23.
Initially, there had been confusion as to whether Alvarez had been fatally shot or stabbed, but an autopsy revealed that the victim died of a gunshot wound.
Video taken at the scene with newly-installed video cameras, police said, shows Alvarez getting into a verbal debate with the trio before the argument turned physical. After brutally attacking him, Alvarez was shot and the suspects fled.
On Sunday, NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper appeared on Spectrum News where he maintained his pledge that those responsible will be found and arrested.
“I stood there Friday — I spoke to the press — I said I am very confident that detectives will be making identifications and arrests in the very near future and as I sit here right now significant progress has been made in that car by detectives,” Kemper said. “Detectives are looking for them right now.”
Kemper also stated that more cops are being surged into the transit system under the orders of Mayor Eric Adams and top cop Edward Caban, resulting in some 1,000 more officers each day.
Police are asking the public to contact them if they know the whereabouts of Herde, Cotto, or Trinidad.
