CUNY’s York College and Queens College were evacuated on Thursday after receiving an emailed bomb threat, police said. Authorities later cleared both schools after deeming the threat “non credible,” according to the NYPD.
The message from an unknown person threatening both schools came in at 12:48 p.m., the NYPD said. Police said the schools were promptly evacuated and searched, but police did not find anything.
Queens College said in a social media post that its campus in Kew Gardens Hills was closed and classes would be held remotely for the rest of the day on Thursday.
“The NYPD has left campus after investigating the matter,” Queens College spokesperson Maria Matteo told Gothamist on Thursday afternoon. “All classes and business services will resume on schedule [Friday].”
York College said on its website that all classes went remote as of 1:15 p.m. and its campus buildings in Jamaica were closed.
“A bomb threat was received by York College earlier today,” York College representative Dana Trimboli told Gothamist on Thursday. “Out of an abundance of caution, the campus was evacuated, and work / classes resumed remotely for the remainder of the day. The NYPD has provided the ‘all clear’ and classes / work will resume on schedule [Friday]. We thank the campus community for their cooperation.”
Queens Borough President Donovan Richards said his office was monitoring the situation.
“Making threats like these are dangerous and disgusting,” he said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We won’t stand for this in Queens.”
No injuries were reported and the NYPD said police are continuing to investigate the incident.
