Two Staten Island Railway conductors were assaulted at the St. George Terminal on Wednesday morning, officials said.
The incident occurred around 7:20 a.m. at the terminal, which serves as a transportation hub for both the Staten Island Railway and the Staten Island Ferry, when a customer appeared to be having trouble using a MetroCard vending machine, according to MTA officials. Two female conductors came over to help, officials said, before the customer punched one conductor and shoved past the other before fleeing.
Both women were taken to Staten Island University Hospital and discharged later Wednesday and placed on leave, authorities said. One had minor injuries to her face while the other experienced minor back injuries, officials said.
“The MTA takes assaults on employees very seriously and itโs unconscionable that anyone would assault a transit worker who is trying to serve the public,” MTA Police spokesperson Meghan Keegan said in a statement to Gothamist. “The MTA Police are investigating and are in the early stages of identifying and pursuing the suspect.โ
MTA spokesperson Lucas Bejarano said no weapons were used in the assault.
