Police were searching on Monday for a suspect in connection with an apparently random attack on the city’s subway in Manhattan.
According to NYPD officials, a 64-year-old man was standing on the A/C/E subway platform at the Penn Station-34th Street stop around 4:50 p.m. Sunday when a male stranger approached him and asked him a question.
The man did not understand the question, and the stranger kicked him in the back — causing him to fall onto the subway tracks, police said.
First responders took the man to Lenox Hill Hospital in stable condition, according to officials. He had a minor injury to his leg and pain in his back, and his identity has not been released.
Police said the suspect fled the station. Officers canvassed the area on Sunday but have not yet made any arrests.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns about violence on New York City’s subway system, after three killings so far this year.
Last week, a train conductor was slashed on the job, leading some MTA workers to disrupt service on two lines as they called for more to be done to ensure their safety. Police are still looking for a suspect in that incident and another suspect in an alleged anti-LGBTQ slashing of a rider on Friday.
This is a developing story and may be updated.
