Attorney General’s Office launches probe into Bronx civilian death following NYPD encounter

The Office of Special Investigation (OSI), under the New York Attorney General’s jurisdiction, has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the death of a civilian in The Bronx. The incident, which occurred on Sept. 9, 2023, transpired after an incident involving the individual and two officers from the NYPD.

The scene unfolded on East Tremont Avenue in Throgs Neck at a local convenience store. NYPD reports suggest that after they arrived, the officers were confronted by a person wielding a knife. One of the officers then discharged his service firearm in response. Despite being rushed to a nearby medical facility, the civilian was declared deceased. Investigative officers have since recovered knives from the location of the incident.

OSI’s decision to delve deeper into this event is in accordance with New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, which mandates a thorough assessment of any incident reported wherein an officer’s actions, or lack thereof, might have culminated in a fatality.

This stipulation applies to both on-duty and off-duty officers and does not discriminate based on a deceased person’s possession of weapons or their custodial status. An extensive probe is initiated by OSI if preliminary assessments determine an officer’s potential culpability in the death.
