Bronx driver charged with failure to yield in fatal crosswalk crash that killed 99-year-old woman – New York Daily News

A Bronx investment banker has been charged with failure to yield on Wednesday, about nine months after he struck and killed a 99-year-old woman in a crosswalk, according to police.

Brian Spira of Riverdale was also hit with a charge of failure to operate with due care for the July 27, 2022 crash that killed Bernice Schwartz at the intersection of Oxford St. and W. 235th St. at 8:30 a.m. — a block from her home and months shy of her 100th birthday.

Schwartz was just returning home from buying groceries Saturday morning when police say Spira, 54, struck her while making a left in his 2022 Mazda CX9 SUV, mortally injuring the almost-centenarian.

The victim suffered multiple head injuries and died at St. Barnabas Hospital a short time later.

Spira remained at the scene. Police had no information about why it took this long to charge the driver.

Schwartz’s family could not be reached for comment on the charges.

A message left with Spira was not immediately returned.
