Bronx stepdad indicted in ‘horrific’ strangling death of boy, 15

A hot-tempered Bronx stepdad faces manslaughter charges after he killed his 15-year-old stepson with a stranglehold during an argument, according to prosecutors.

Tyresse Minter, 28, had been out of prison for only a month on January 23 when he got in an argument with his partner’s son, Corde Scott.

Minter told police that he picked the teenager up from school, where he had been getting in trouble and acting out.

The argument became more heated, according to Bronx District Attorney Darcell Clark, and Minter threw Corde into a chokehold, then rapped his legs around the boy to prevent him from breaking free.

Minter was arraigned Wednesday before Supreme Court Justice Naita Semja-Williams, who rejected prosecutors’ request that he be held behind bars. The defendant was released without bail.

At the time of the death, Minter told the cops that the boy had pulled a knife on him. But he also claimed that Corde suffered an acute asthma attack, according to the NYPD.

“At the moment, [the stepfather] seemed like he was empathetic, saddened,” recalled his aunt Lavell Scott, 37. “It didn’t make sense with the story … He didn’t have no cardiac history. So for a 15-year-old — for me, it didn’t add up all the way.”

The stepfather waited 20 minutes before calling 911, according to the Bronx prosecutor.

Minter had served a five-year sentence for an August 2018 shooting in which he originally faced attempted murder charges, according to court records. He pleaded down to assault.

Scott was unconscious when he was rushed from his family’s apartment in Westchester Square to Jacobi Medical Center on Jan. 23, according to cops.

He had suffered trauma and bruising to his neck, and doctors could not save him.

After the boy’s death, the doctor who pronounced him dead called the police, who took the 28-year-old stepfather into custody.

On Wednesday, Clark announced Minter’s indictment on manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide charges.
