Family of the Brooklyn man gunned down for stealing his ex-girlfriend’s cellphone said they warned him to stay away from his ex.
“I told him to stay away from her, because of the arguments and the fights,” Dennis Morgan Sr., father of the victim, told the Daily News on Monday. “You can’t get along with somebody, you gotta stay away from that person. Unhealthy relationship.”
Police arrested Joseph Black for the shooting of Dennis Morgan, who was gunned down around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on Ashford St. across from the Boulevard Houses in East New York, Brooklyn, police said.
Morgan, 40, was arguing with his ex-girlfriend, Crystal Smith, after taking her cellphone and refusing to give it back, witnesses told The News.
Smith, 38, left and came back with a group of men, including her son, who beat up Morgan at the corner, a police source and witnesses said.
Black, 39, then allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Morgan.
“The shot went through his chest and out the back,” said one witness who didn’t want to be named. “He went down and I went over to help him. I told him not to move. He couldn’t speak. There was so much blood coming from his mouth.”
Everyone ran off except Smith. Cops on Thursday charged her with manslaughter and gang assault for her role in the slaying.
Lisa Miller said that her son had a volatile relationship with Crystal, but she wasn’t aware of any physical violence between the two, adding that her son truly loved his on-again, off-again girlfriend.
“They used to argue a lot, but I haven’t really seen them fighting,” said Miller. “Dennis really loved her. He always wanted to be around her.”
The murder has devastated his family, according to Miller, who remembered Morgan as a devoted father and loving son.
“I can’t believe that he’s gone and the way that he went — it’s a lot,” she said. “He was a loving, caring person. He would help anybody who needed.”
