FDNY and Red Cross will install a free smoke alarm in your home

The American Red Cross is installing free smoke alarms across the five boroughs.

The organization launched a “Sound the Alarm” program with the city’s fire department and its private nonprofit foundation.

Fires have killed more New Yorkers than residents of any other state between January and August of this year, claiming 100 deaths, Newsday reported. Most of those deaths — 71 — took place in New York City.

Having a functioning smoke alarm can cut the risk of death by half, according to the Red Cross.

“Smoke alarms save lives,” Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh told Gothamist in an email statement.

“All New Yorkers should take advantage of the free smoke detector program in partnership with the FDNY Foundation and the Red Cross. These devices are your first line of defense during a fire, so please make sure your alarm is functional and if you need one, please sign up through the Red Cross website.”
