A 36-year-old man was fatally shot outside the Astoria Houses in Queens on Monday afternoon, according to the NYPD, setting off chaos among passersby.
The victim was heading into the housing complex carrying groceries when he was blasted once in the stomach at 5:32 p.m. on Astoria Blvd. near First St., police said.
An eyewitness, who declined to be identified, said that the man was immediately struck down.
โIt was one shot. Blam!โ said the witness, a 33-year-old Parks Department worker. โIt was like thunder. He was lying there bleeding, and they were trying to resuscitate him. They brought him back briefly. They put him on the stretcher, but he was unconscious.โ
The neighbor said that pandemonium broke out after the murder.
โIt was crazy. And it was in broad daylight. All types of people running and screaming,โ he said.
The wounded man was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he died about an hour later.
The victimโs sister showed up at the scene later in the evening as homicide detectives and crime scene investigators pored over the evidence.
โWho shot my brother?โ she yelled, cursing at police. โWhy canโt the police tell me? Theyโre parked right over there all the time. How couldnโt [they] see him?โ
The assailant, who was wearing a black jacket over a green hoodie, black sweatpants and white sneakers, fled after the shooting, according to cops.
He has not been apprehended, and the investigation continues.
The death caps a day of violence in public housing across the city.
