Another man was shot and killed early Sunday in a Brooklyn neighborhood that’s experienced a spike in gun violence this year.
Lavel Frasier, 40, was fatally shot around 1 a.m. Sunday in the basement of a brownstone on Sterling Place near Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights, according to police.
First responders found him with a gunshot wound to the torso, and he was pronounced dead at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, officials said.
Police said Frasier lived on Washington Avenue in Prospect Heights, less than half a mile from where he was shot.
He is the sixth person to die from gun violence in Crown Heights in 2024, as the neighborhood leads the city in fatal shootings so far this year. There have been more than 30 gun homicides across the five boroughs since January, NYPD data shows.
Frasier was shot less than a mile from where 13-year-old Troy Gill was gunned down on Feb. 29. The teenager’s death spurred a call to action, with local anti-violence organizations like Save Our Streets imploring young people to take advantage of their programs to stay out of dangerous situations.
On Monday, a small memorial of candles and flowers was set up outside the building where Frasier was shot. Several neighbors declined to speak with Gothamist, but one first-floor resident of the building said he heard four shots coming from the basement early Sunday.
Reached by phone, some of Frasier’s relatives said they didn’t know much about what had happened and didn’t want to comment until they learned more.
Police have not yet made any arrests in the killing and are continuing to investigate.
