NYC can expect more snow through Friday: National Weather Service

Snowfall is expected to return to the New York City metropolitan area on Friday — where frigid temperatures are expected to drag into the weekend, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

The region should prepare for 2 to 3 inches of snowfall expected on Friday morning, just days after Central Park broke its 701-day drought of measurable snow on Tuesday with 1.7 inches.

An arctic air mass will bring cold temperatures into the weekend, as temperatures on Friday night and Saturday evening will hover in the upper teens, according to James Tomasini, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“The coldest day would be Saturday, with highs only in the mid 20s,” Tomasini said on Thursday morning, adding that wind chill values will be in the single digits.

Snow could potentially arrive before daybreak on Friday, as light flurries may appear as early as 4 a.m., per the latest forecast. But snowfall becomes more likely after 7 or 8 a.m. on Friday — though it’s expected to miss most of the commuter rush Friday morning.

The heaviest snowfall is expected between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, and will taper off into the evening hours, according to the latest forecast.

“We are looking at another light snowfall event here,” Tomasini said.

The city has activated Code Blue operations several times this week, referring to its requirement to provide every homeless person with shelter when temperatures drop below freezing between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m. Another Code Blue will be active from Thursday night into Friday morning.

Tomasini said the region is in for “a slow warming trend” after Saturday, paving the way for a warmer week.

“By Sunday, our highs are back in the lower 30s, then back in the mid to upper 30s on Monday — then actually into the lower 40s on Tuesday and Wednesday,” Tomasini said.
