Local Halloween partygoers and others, rejoice: no rain is currently predicted in the New York City area next weekend, which follows seven consecutive weekends of rain and comes just days before the spooky holiday.
“It does look at least more positive now than it has the past few weekends,” Brian Frugis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albany, told Gothamist on Sunday.
Forecasters are expecting mostly sunny skies and above-normal temperatures in the low- to mid- 70s next Saturday and Sunday, according to NWS.
Frugis said the recent back-to-back rainy weekends were “a little on the unusual side” for the New York metro’s weather around this time of year, but noted that such patterns happen occasionally. NWS records show more rain was measured at Central Park last month than in any September since 1883.
While it now appears the city will avoid rain next weekend, Frugis cautioned that the forecast isn’t set in stone. “Things could definitely change,” he said. “It’s looking good and stable now, but I would recommend that people keep their eyes on the forecast in case anything changes.”
On Saturday morning, heavy rain triggered a mudslide in Westchester that buried parts of four train tracks used by Metro-North and Amtrak, suspending service on those lines through Sunday afternoon. But on Sunday evening, New York Gov. Hochul and Amtrak said service would largely be restored in time for New Yorkers’ Monday morning commutes.
